A new antibiotic compound could help treat a bacterium the World Health Organization classes as a major threat. An expert microbiologist has hailed the discovery of a potential new class of antibiotics that could treat lethal hospital infections as “very exciting”. The new compound, zosurabalpin, worked “extremely well” in test-tubes and mice, Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership scientific director Prof Laura Piddock said.

China’s medical regulator has suspended imports from Japanese cosmetics company Hoyu Co after conducting an online inspection of its factory in Japan. The inspection by China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) focused on whether Hoyu was producing cosmetics in accordance with technical requirements. Hoyu Co confirmed the inspection but did not comment on the suspension of imports.

The authorities’ have blocked access to 1,675 websites selling illegal pharmaceutical products and confiscated various products worth more than RM500,000 through Operation Pangea XVI conducted across the country from October 3-10. The Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Pharmacy Services senior director Norhaliza A Halim said 76 per cent of the websites that were detected selling illegal pharmaceutical products were through e-commerce platforms.

HIV disclosure law being reviewed: MOH

A law requiring those with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to inform their sexual partners of the risk of HIV transmission or face jail time is being reviewed, said the Ministry of Health (MOH). This is as studies have shown that people living with HIV who have been compliant with treatment and have maintained a stable undetectable viral load have practically no risk of transmitting HIV to their sexual partners, MOH said in response to queries from The Straits Times.
